Even in you have two left feet, you’re invited to try out an evening of swing dancing with us hosted by Hit that Jive Productions. Wednesday, November 1st, the Don Berner Trio will take the stage to set the tone for a night of casual dance lessons. To give you some background: Hit That Jive Productions is a non-profit organization based in Edmonton, Alberta, that promotes social dancing, performance and theatre. Their mission is to foster a healthy and active community around these art forms, and to enable artists to grow their work by creating opportunities for events, workshops, and other projects.
Though many of their projects are centred around a passion for vernacular jazz dances and music of the 1920’s, 1930’s, and 1940’s, their work is not limited to the swing era. They believe in an interdisciplinary approach to projects, and as such support dancing, teaching, and performance in a variety of styles and genres, in addition to promoting swing dance and jazz music. Their goal is to bring the rich history and culture of the jazz-age decades to the local arts community and the people of Edmonton, and to support other forms of dance, theatre, and music.
The dance we’ll be learning on November 1st is the Lindy Hop. Lindy Hop is an African-American jazz dance that found its roots in the big-band era music of the 1930s and 40s. Characterized by fancy footwork, partner connection, musicality, and improvisation, Lindy Hop is a fun dance for everyone to learn!
To get an idea of what we’re going for, check out this video of one of your instructors, Julie, at a competition (where her team won first place) in Ottawa. Of course you won’t be judged or dancing for an audience, but the music will be similar as well as the dance of course!
